Flax-carbon and absorption of microshocks Carbon fiber composite materials have major advantages for building high-end racing frames. They offer lightweight construction and can be formed into many exotic shapes and designs. The chemical composition of carbon fiber affords a very high tensile strength, resulting in a very stiff frame. The stiffer the frame, the faster you can ride (maximum power transmission). However, this stiffness conveys road microshocks to the body. A stiff carbon frame does not make for a comfortable ride.
Designers for other manufacturers attempt to solve the comfort problem by selectively compromising stiffness in certain areas of their carbon fiber frames, or in some cases by mixing in other chemical fibers with the carbon fiber matrix to make a hybrid material. Museeuw Bikes applies a unique solution to the stiffness vs. comfort issue by utilizing an exclusive patented hybrid material in the construction process. Called flax-carbon, the Museeuw hybrid material is made with the natural fiber flax mixed with carbon fiber to achieve optimum results never before achieved in bicycle frame construction. Flax fibers, from the flax plant, are among the oldest fiber crops in the world. The use of flax for the production of linen cloth goes back at least to ancient Egyptian times. Composite engineers discovered only recently that specific combinations of the natural flax fiber with modern carbon fiber gives us a completely new hybrid composite that inherently absorbs microshocks effectively.
